On the hill
Soils like nowhere else on earth, ideal for making exceptional wines
Troplong Mondot’s lofty position at the top of a hill is not just a vantage point offering sweeping views. With its specific soil profile and aspect, the hill forms the very signature of Troplong Mondot wines.
And if you are wondering why, the secret lies in the Agenais Molasses.
Behind the name lies an entire ecosystem of clays created at the time of the region’s geological formation. The clay has eroded throughout the appellation, except here, on this particular hill. Here, and here alone, to great depths the clay still overlies the asteries limestone so typical of Saint-Emilion.
The rare and distinctive nature of the clays is a significant component in the soil profile and de facto, in the identity of the wines created at Troplong Mondot.

From a practical perspective, the soils allow greater exchange between the vine roots and minerals present in the soil. In winter they absorb water, and feed it back during the summer months, making the vine more resilient in the face of climate change.
Here Merlot grapes are seen to flourish, creating intense aromatics that shape the essential character of the wines.
This natural intensity is captured as a result of the appellation’s more classic, predominantly limestone soils. These impart vitality, elegance and a certain crispness to complement and balance the intensity and density of the clay.

But there’s more: since the vines are spread all over the hill, this 37-hectare expanse of vines is exposed on all sides which enhances the potential of the terroir.
The difference in altitude, ranging from 60 – 110m, together with a 360° exposure to sun and wind, affects the way that the predominant Merlot behaves, depending on the vineyard parcel or row, in an infinite number of variations.
Here on this unique terroir, with its unparalleled geology, Troplong Mondot cultivates exceptional grapes. The vine takes on the expression of the terroir. It captures the unique character of the terroir to create vibrant wines with fresh, precise aromas that counterbalance the powerful intensity. These distinctive aromas form the signature style of a Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé like no other.

Concrete actions:
- Horse-drawn ploughs working across the entire vineyard
- 15-year-old collaboration with Lydia and Claude Bourguignon, uncontested soil microbiology pioneers.
- Replanting programme in place since 1998, ensuring the right grapes are grown in the most suitable soils.
- Drainage and modifications to the orientation of some of the vine rows to facilitate rain flow.
- Cover planting to encourage vine roots to sink deep into the earth, enriching the soils and attracting fauna.

Results:
- Living, well-oxygenated, well-drained soils with little compaction.
- Microbial activity that tripled during the period 2008-2021.
- Improved release of micro-elements to promote the synthesis of aromas in the wines.
- The vine roots dig deep into the soils, creating greater freshness in the wines and capturing the mineral quality of the subsoil.
